FOREST AND BONO VOX IN SÃO
PAULO
Having had the opportunity of professionally interpreting Bono Vox speeches at the Morumbi Stadium, Malcolm Forest and the leader of U2 got together a number of times during the São Paulo, Brazil venue. Malcolm Forests work went beyond translating, as he offered consulting services on local culture and events as well as coaching for Portuguese expressions and pronunciation. Malcolm took this privileged opportunity to ask for Bonos support for the campaign for the creation of a Brazilian Department of Peace. A letter was delivered to the ONE Foundation to this purpose. One must remember that the 360° Concerts happened amidst national consternation after the tragic shootings in Rio that took the lives of 12 children at the Tasso da Silveira school. Bono Vox liked the idea and said he will consider it. He was very kind, friendly and grateful for the assistance and a bond of friendship was formed. The concept of a Department or Ministry of Peace is long due for Brazil and the world. Usually countries have only Ministries of War or Departments of Defense. There are no official departments fully dedicated to the development of a culture of peace! A similar campaign is now in effect in the US. Malcolm Forest has put up an on line petition for this campaign. Please sign now too and make your Easter gesture of Peace: www.malcolmforest.com/malcolmforest/paz.htm. Brazil was officially discovered by Portuguese navigators at Easter time in the year of 1500. The world now turns for Brazil for leadership. Let it be one of Peace and Love within us and among us. You can make a difference. HAPPY EASTER AND GOD BLESS YOU! |

FOREST AND GISELE BÜNDCHEN FOR MARINA SILVA
O Artist Malcolm Forest and top model Gisele Bündchen express support for Marina Silva, Brazilian Green Party presidential candidate. Last Thursday the 23rd in New York, world top model Gisele Bündchen expressed publicly her support for Marina Silva as her presidential candidate. Many other Brazilian stars and artists have manifested their support for Brazilian Green Partys Marina Silva, in recent months. Singer and environmentalist Malcolm Forest is one. |
MARINA
SILVA FOR PRESIDENT
Marina Silva grew up in extreme poverty
in one of the worlds most isolated areas in the Amazon and was illiterate
until sixteen. She grew up as one of 12 siblings in a poor family in the
province of Acre, Western Brazil Amazon. Totally dependent of the rubber
plantation, the family practically lived as slaves. She reduced deforestation in the Amazon to historically low levels, by 60% from 2004 to 2007. Marina Silva used drastic measures and clamped down on all illegal activity in the forest. While protecting the rainforest, she also balanced the concerns of indigenous peoples traditional farming societies. She faced enormous challenges. The ministry was weak and isolated, and deforestation in the Amazon was accelerating. Vested economic interest, sometimes criminal, were fiercely opposed and willing to go far to stop conservation. Despite this, Silva managed to forge alliances and to use laws and institutions to turn things around. Huge areas were conserved, more than 700 people were arrested for illegal activities in the forest, over 1.500 companies were closed down and equipment, properties and illegal timber were confiscated. These measures were effective. During Silvas last three years in government, deforestation was reduced to the second lowest level in 20 years. As a result to this, the earth avoided emissions of 520 million tons of CO2, or ten times Norways annual emissions. Marina Silva was forced to resign as Minister of the Environment, citing the increasing resistance in central parts of government and the society. The resistance became too massive after she made the government adopt a new set of measures to prevent the deforestation that was then increasing again. Marina Silva continued her struggle from her post as senator in the national assembly and still has great influence on environmental policy in Brazil. Marina Silva current presidential campaign has grown enormously for the election of next October 3. For her remarkable achievements, Marina Silva, a great example, a true champion for the Amazon and one of Brazils greatest Horatio Algers personae was honored with the Paul Donovan Kigar Life Achievement Award at the São Paulo City Assembly hall, on December 8, 2009. Other honorary recognitions include the Sophie Prize, 2009. |

THE
BRAZILIAN AMAZON AND GLOBAL WARMING
| Brazils rainforest absorbs massive amounts of CO2. Rainforest conservation is crucial to limit the greenhouse effect and dramatic climate changes. Nonetheless the country has not managed to contain destruction of its forests; despite Marina Silvas great work. The current government is now facing 480,000 forest fires as the Amazon and other natural areas burn away to a slow death, without any especial concern or effort on the part of the authorities of Brazil. The brush fires caused by draught, criminal fires by arsons and companies interested in occupying green areas are responsible for the huge volume of CO2 that Brazil sets out to the atmosphere in 2010. For these reasons, Brazil is among the four major contributors to the world greenhouse effect, climate change and global warming. | |

MALCOLM
FOREST AND THE AMAZON DEFENSE
| Born Malcolm Dale
Kigar, Malcolm adopted the artistic name of Malcolm Forest in 1976 for considering
the rainforests a most important constitutional element for life on our
planet. An alumnus of UCLA, where he graduated from, magna cum laude, in
music and cinema, Malcolm Forest has been a continuous advocate for life
and nature. He was one of the activists that worked towards the creation
of the São Paulo Greenbelt Biosphere Reserve and the founding of
the AMAR ngo. He is the author of the Jurupari film and activist project.
Malcolm Forest and Gisele Bündchen have in common a strong faith in Marina Silva. If elected president of Brazil, in their opinion, she can further the preservation of the Amazon rainforest and other ecosystems and significantly contribute towards global cooling. |
